St Margaret’s Church, Carsington

The church of St Margaret’s is believed to be of l2th century origin but was rebuilt in 1648 and stands on the bottom slopes of Carsington Pastures. However in 1971, a gravedigger dug up the skeletons of a man, woman and child, probably of Anglo-Saxon origin, giving rise to further speculation of the date of the first church.

The church is described as a small ancient building, without a steeple, and scarcely distinguishable from the cliffs that overhang it. Consisting simply of nave and south porch and a turret containing one bell: it was repaired and a new roof put on in 1854, and in 1874 was re-seated with open benches, and a south porch built: The octagonal font is of early date: there is room for 140 people to sit.

The register dates from 1592 for all entries. The Dean of Lincoln is the patron, the Rev Thomas SMITH, rector, and the Rev Robert GELL, the present curate. The register dates from 1592 for all entries
